What will you be doing?
This role will take the lead in ‘Business Planning’ for the PRE Signalling team, this requires management of the renewals workbank to support the prioritisation of work in line with risk and business requirements to meet control period funding settlements. The purpose of this role is to determine renewal requirements and priorities (including change control), produce investment papers and develop and allocate signalling engineering renewal and enhancement requirements. Produce specifications and acceptance criteria for signalling engineering works to achieve the required scope and quality in accordance with company engineering policies.
In addition to the above, for a suitable candidate, this role will have opportunity to have mentorship and develop skills across the PRE Signalling portfolio, interfacing with maintenance activities with the support team, signal sighting and SINCs to provide a diverse experience for future career opportunities to suit the candidates requirements.

Lead on Business Planning activities to manage and track funding provision in line with renewal priorities and risk.
Apply and manage risk ranking according to CRAM on portfolio of works
Inspect and prioritise renewal proposals for inclusion in the signalling engineering workbank. Provide support to the production and prioritisation of the national business plan.
Develop allocated renewal and enhancement schemes to meet Network Rail’s goals prior to handover to delivery. Following handover, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes agreed. Check that completed schemes are appropriately assessed to determine they meet the project remit.
Specify acceptance criteria for signalling engineering works including design approval, acceptance of equipment and hand back to maintenance as appropriate. Audit acceptance processes are being discharged appropriately.
Work with members of the other asset management teams to review renewal and enhancement proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system and identify critical technical problems.
Identify issues of national significance and elevate to the national team.
Check that accurate and comprehensive records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of signalling engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current ‘as built’ status.
Participate in investigations of incidents relating to renewals where required.
Carry out Engineering verification activities in support of the national programme
Carry out asset condition inspections that will inform the signalling asset condition database and the renewals work bank
In order to be successful in this role, you will need to be/ to have:
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
- Experience of signalling engineering, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
- Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
- Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales
- Knowledge of policy and standards relating to signalling engineering
- Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain
We would also like but it isn’t crucial to be/to have:
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Knowledge of project management techniques
