About Disability Horizons

Our Story

Disability Horizons was founded in 2011 by two disabled friends — Martyn Sibley and Srin Madipalli — after a road trip to California sparked the idea of a disability lifestyle magazine run by disabled people, for disabled people. Not political. Not clinical. Real life, honestly told.

Over twelve years it grew into one of the UK’s most widely read disability publications, reaching over 700,000 people a year at its peak. Hundreds of disabled writers contributed articles on travel, relationships, employment, technology, sport and everyday life. The magazine became a trusted home for disabled voices at a time when mainstream media largely ignored them.

By 2020, Martyn had co-founded Purple Goat Agency, a specialist disability marketing agency, and in 2023 he took the difficult decision to close the magazine in its original form after twelve wonderful years.

The brand, archive and shop were transferred to Equip-Able Ltd so that the mission could continue.

Disability Horizons Today

Disability Horizons is now edited and published by Duncan Edwards through Equip-Able Ltd. Duncan has been part of the Disability Horizons family since 2019, when he launched and ran the Disability Horizons Shop. He has designed, manufactured and sold disability products since 2007, co-founded Trabasack with his wife Clare — a full-time wheelchair user — and has deep roots in disability services, welfare benefits advice and advocacy.

The archive of thousands of articles from 2011–2023 is maintained and still actively read. Alongside it, new articles are published in the spirit of the original mission — practical, honest and community-focused.

Martyn Sibley and Srin Madipalli are the co-founders of Disability Horizons and the people who built something remarkable. They are not involved in the day-to-day running of the publication.

A note on former team members

Disability Horizons was built by a remarkable group of disabled writers, editors and contributors over twelve years. Many have gone on to their own brilliant projects — including Crip Life magazine (Emma Purcell and Joanna Baker-Rogers), MZTV (Zec Richardson) and Access My Events (Zubee Kibria). We honour their contribution to everything Disability Horizons became.
